Wordpress Google Blog Search Bypass Plugin

Date October 17, 2007

I’m just about to release my very first Wordpress plugin, here on Daily Moolah. One of the biggest gripes about Wordpress 2.3 has been the fact that the Technorati Incoming Links on the Admin Dashboard has been replaced with Incoming Links from Google Blog Search. While I’m sure this was all done with good intentions, Google Blog Search is terrible at showing the number of new incoming links accurately, and I sorely missed seeing who linked to me via the Technorati Incoming Links module in the Wordpress Dashboard.

Replacing Google Blog Search with Technorati

Wordpress Google Blog Search Bypass Plugin

Google Blog Search is currently flawed, and shows all your own posts as incoming links. This is a waste of your productivity, and also means that you must manually check Technorati to see the number of new blog reactions and incoming links your blog is receiving.

Others have shared my frustration, and some have even contemplated going back to Wordpress 2.2 to get Technorati Incoming Links back! Fear not, that is utterly unnecessary with the Wordpress Google Blog Search Bypass plugin I’m releasing. Now you can blog in the comfort of Wordpress 2.3’s varied and secure release, while still enjoying that old world charm that Wordpress 2.2 provided. It’s a super simple, no-nonsense plugin that is meant to do only one thing : show you those backlinks! I’ve seen another plugin that serves the same purpose around the blogosphere but mine uses only 5 lines of code and is less than 2kb in total :)

Enjoy the nostalgia of the good old features of a legacy release by ditching the evil Google Blog Search and adopting Technorati Incoming Links again.

Looks cool though it may be bad timing because for some reason my Dashboard is no longer showing me any incoming links. This starting happening a few hours ago. I’ve installed your plugin but I cant test it until Wordpress sort the dashboard out!

Great plug-in idea! But where are the instructions on where to download it into? What folders do we upload into what folders on Wordpress?

It’d be nice if you listed step by step instructions beginning from the download link to the uploading and activiating steps.

      Thanks.

Hi, never mind, I figured it out. Your download, after it is unzipped, contains a php file and a read me file. I figured the read me was not going to be uploaded. So what I did was I uploaded the php file into the plug-in folder and volia! It worked.

Luckily I was able to figure it out because I’d been on the learning curve for a few weeks now (I just moved to WP recently) but for the benefit of newbies, you might want to create a step by step process from start to finish to encourage those who might be “nervous” to take the steps on their own.

P.S. Great plug in by the way! I hadn’t realized what I was looking at when I saw the “incoming links” in the dashboard. It never really hit me that I was looking at my own posts as part of incoming links! I thought that was strange but dismissed it until I learned about your plug-in. BRILLIANT!

Thanks Stephen! After reading your comment, I’ve included instructions on installing and activating the plugin. Just another way that I always plan to include my reader’s suggestions into this blog — Dev

GREAT JOB! Glad you took my suggestions and put up the steps for “newbies.” Nice and easy to follow!
